Hot Tub and Spa Safety Tips
  • Outside hot tubs/spas should be enclosed and in a secure locked area to prevent unauthorized and unsupervised use.
  • Children must be constantly supervised in the hot tub or spa area.
  • Never use a hot tub or spa alone.
  • Limit time in the hot tub or spa to no more than 15 minutes.
  • Do not use a hot tub or spa if the water temperature is more than 104 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • The high water temperature in a hot tub or spa will accelerate drowsiness if a person has consumed alcohol or is taking drugs, increasing the risk of drowning.
  • Proper use of chemicals, cleaning and/or changing of filters, testing water and following preventative maintenance schedules will ensure sanitary conditions.
  • Pregnant women, persons with heart disease, diabetes or high blood pressure problems and elderly people should not use a hot tub or spa without a doctor’s permission.
  • Keep electrical appliances away from a hot tub or spa.
  • Have a phone, police and rescue squad phone numbers nearby in case of an emergency.
  • An emergency shut-off should be easily accessible.
  • To avoid drowning or injury, people with long hair should wear a cap. Do not wear loose or torn clothing in the hot tub or spa.
  • Suction points and drains should be properly covered and grated.
